Sengoku 6 Results: Gomi Upset By Golyaev

gomi.jpg

From MMAJunkie.com:

Gomi (29-4), a former PRIDE lightweight champion and one of WVR's top stars, could never put away his Red Devil opponent. In fact, Golyaev (11-6) capitalized on Gomi's slip and stumble in the second round and battered him with a series of blows. The third round was likely the deciding factor, and though Gomi finished strong, Golyaev got the decision.

Gomi, who this week was named the sport's top non-UFC lightweight by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) readers and "Inside MMA" viewers, also threw a wrench into WVR's plans for a lightweight title fight. The organization's lightweight grand prix also concluded at Sengoku 6, and the winner was expected to meet Gomi for the first-ever WVR lightweight title in early 2009.

I certainly didn't see that one coming. I guess that is what happens when you have long lay-offs and you don't fight top-level competition. I have not seen a lot of Gomi's fights but from what I have seen he is a very exciting fighter who can usually hang with the best in the world. I hope he bounces back from this and gets back to his winning ways.

Here are the rest of the results, which include Muhammed Lawal following up his upset victory over Travis Wuiff in his previous fight with a 3rd round TKO of Fabio Silva:

  • Jorge Santiago def. Kazuhiro Nakamura via TKO (strikes) -- Round 3, 0:49
  • Satoru Kitaoka def. Kazunori Yokota via unanimous decision
  • Sergey Golyaev def. Takanori Gomi via split decision
  • Muhammed Lawal def. Fabio Silva via TKO (strikes) -- Round 3, 0:41
  • Antonio Rogerio Nogueira def. Moise Rimbon via unanimous decision
  • Jorge Masvidal def. Seung Hwan Bang via unanimous decision
  • Joe Doerksen def. Izuru Takeuchi via TKO (punches) -- Round 3, 4:13
  • Satoru Kitaoka def. Eiji Mitsuoka via submission (heel hook) -- Round 1, 1:16
  • Kazunori Yokota def. Mizuto Hirota via unanimous decision
  • Kazuhiro Nakamura def. Yuki Sasaki via unanimous decision
  • Jorge Santiago def. Siyar Bahadurzada via submission (heel hook) -- Round 1, 1:10

UFC 89 Breakdown, Open Discussion & Results (Spoiler Alert!)

ufc_89.jpg

I will not be doing a live blog of this card but instead I will be posting spoilers of the results live as they come in. The card will air live at 3 pm EST and then run on SpikeTV (tape delayed) at 9 pm EST.

Pre-Fight Breakdown

Let's start the breakdowns with the main event:

Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben- Middleweights

This is a match-up that was originally suposed to take place at UFC 85. Leben had to serve a few days in jail to satisfy an old probation charge and Bisping went on to demolish Canadian Jason Day in his second bout at the middleweight level. This is an interesting fight as Leben always has that left hand that can knock anyone out at anytime. Bisping has never been finished and has fought some guys much bigger than himself. I look for Bisping to keep on the outside and pick Leben apart with his punches and kicks. If Leben can maintain control and fight a controlled game plan he can pull out a victory but I see him eventually abandoning any strategy his camp has come up with and looking for that home run shot.

Keith Jardine vs. Brandon Vera- Light Heavyweights

With this being Vera's econd fight at the 205lb limit I see him adapting to the cut a lot easier than he did in his last bout with Andy Reese where we saw him tired and without any energy for much of the bout. Vera is supremely talented and as well rounded as they come. Jardine is as up and down as they come from such highs as defeating Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin to such lows as being knocked out by Houston Alexander and Wanderlai Silva in less than two minutes combined. Jardine will look to utilize his leg kicks while Vera will look to use his Muy Thai skills and his kickboxing skills to control the action. If this fight goes to the ground Vera has an obvious advantage. With that bieng said I see these two fighters remaining on their feet and looking to score points rather than the knockout.

Sokoudjou vs. Luiz Cane- Light Heavyweights

Both men have serious power and will look to stand and trade. Sokoudjou has the better pedigree of opponents as he has knocked out the likes of Lil Nog, Ricardo Arona and Kazuhiro Nakamura while Cane's victory roll includes Jason Lambert and Andre Gustavo. We won't see a lot of ground work in this one if we see any at all. I honestly don't see this one getting out of the first round.

Paul Taylor vs. Chris Lytle- Welterweights

This is Taylor's fourth fight in front of his hometown fans and this may be a make or break fight for him. He is currently 1-2 in the UFC with his lone victory coming against Jess Liaudin. With the welterweight division as stacked as it is I don't see much of a future for Taylor other than keeping him around to fight on these UK cards. Lytle is as tough as they come as evidenced by his last fight against Josh Koshcheck. A beaten abd bloodied Lytle never backed down and actually remained the aggressor but Koshcheck was too much and won a unanimous decison but Lytle won over many fans that night. Lytle is a good fighter and will probably have a job with the UFC for a long time. I see him controlling the action in this one and that means staying out of trouble while scoring points when he can.

Marcus Davis vs. Paul Kelly- Welterweights

Both of these guys have knockout power and this should be a really exciting fight with plenty of fireworks. Davis loves fighting in front of the British and will be looking to avenge his loss to Mike Swick at UFC 85. This is Taylor's second fight for the UFC with his first being a unanimous decision win over Paul Taylor back at UFC 80. Kelly represents a stiff test for Davis and will be looking to knock him out and making this a short one. I don't see this one lasting all that long either.

Shane Carwin vs. Neil Wain- Heavyweights

Carwin is undefeated in his 9 fights but what's impressive is that he has more submission victories (5) than he does knockout (4). His UFC debut was a short one where we saw him knock out Christian Wellisch in 44 seconds. Wain is also undefeated at 4-0 with all his wins coming via knockout or TKO. I don't know much about him other than he is big, strong and he's another Brit looking to please the home crowd.

Dan Hardy vs. Akihiro Gono- Welterweights

This is Hardy's debut in the UFC as he has fought primarily in the United Kingdom. Hardy has knockout power and will certainly look to bang. In Gono Hardy faces his toughest opponent to date. Gono is a Pride veteran with fights against the likes of Dan Henderson, Denis Kang, Shogun and Dream middleweight champion Gegard Mousassi so the experience factor has to go to him. In his lone UFC bout he defeated a Tamdan McCrory via and armbar in the second round. Gono is crafty and can fight standing or on the ground. I see this one going the distance.

Jess Liaudin vs. David Bielkheden- Welterweights

Not much to say about this fight. Bielkheden was dominated in his UFC debut by Diego Sanchez in what was a first round loss. Liaudin is 12-10 in his career and is 2-2 in his UFC fights all of which have come in the UK. Neither one of these guys is going to make an impact in the welterweight division but with both guys having nothing to lose we should see an exciting fight.

Sam Stout vs. Terry Etim- Lightweights

I have always been a big fan of Sam Stout he is exciting and leaves nothing behind in any of his fights. His fights with Spencer Fisher were two of the best fights I have seen. Stout is 2-2 in in the UFC and will look to keep this fight standing as the ydon't call him hands of stone for nothing. Etim is 10-2 with 9 of his wins coming via submission so we obviously know he will look to take Stout down as quickly as possible to avoid any major damage. Etim is 1-2 in the UFC and another loss could spell trouble for him. Interesting note is both men are coming off of losses to Rich Clementi.

David Baron vs. Jim Miller- Lightweights

This is Baron's first foray into the UFC but he does so coming off a win over Hayato Sakurai in May. He has fought in Pride before losing to Takanori Gomi via submission in the first round. Baron is a strong ground fighter with good submissions. Miller is 11-1 with his last fight coming in April on an IFL card where he defeated Bart Palaszewski. Miller has also fought and lost to UFC contender Frankie Edgar. Miller is another fighter with strong submission skills so you can bet we will see a lot of ground work in this fight. Miller is the younger brother of UFC fighter and former IFL middleweight champion Dan Miller.

Per Eklund vs. Samy Schiavo- Lightweights

This is Eklund's second fight for the UFC as he lost to Sam Stout via unanimous decision at UFC 80. Eklund has good ground skills and will look for a submission especially something to do with the arm as five if his six submission victories have come in that area. Schiavo lost in his UFC debut back in April to Clay Guida via TKO. Schiavo will also look to get it to the ground but has proven in his past that he is as likely to get choked than he is to choke his opponent out. Eight of his fifteen fights have ended in some form of a choke.

So there you have it -- the top of the card looks pretty good and the UFC has loaded this card with as many British fighters as they could. With Bisping recently named as a coach for TUF 9 you know he will be looking to make a very good impression and reward the UFC for that honor. What are your thoughts?

October 10 ShoXC Results

oct_10_shoxc_herman_schall.JPG

HAMMOND, Ind. (Oct. 11, 2008) – Promising, unbeaten heavyweight Dave “Pee Wee’’ Herman of Bloomington, Ind., improved to 12-0 with a 1:06, first-round TKO over Kerry “Meat Truck’’ Schall (21-11) of Cincinnati, Ohio, in the main event Friday on ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series.

Schall got Herman’s attention with a huge overhand right hand approximately a half-minute in.

But the shot only seemed to invigorate and anger Herman, who retaliated with a vengeance. He connected with a series of knees that dropped Schall and then finished off the veteran, who complained afterward about a low blow, with three punches while he was down and defenseless.

“I may have got hit, but I didn’t feel it,’’ said Herman, who improved to 3-0 for EliteXC and 2-0 on SHOWTIME. “I don’t care who I fight next but I hope it is as soon as possible. Actually, I would like to fight on the EliteXC Nov. 8 card on SHOWTIME.’’

Ludwig, Trigg & Waterson all win at Strikeforce "Payback"

michelle_waterson.jpg

BROOMFIELD, CO— Knockout artist Duane “Bang” Ludwig (17-8) capped off an electrifying night of Strikeforce mixed martial arts (MMA) action, scoring a first round TKO on Sam “The Squeeze” Morgan (19-12), in their highly-anticipated rematch at Broomfield, Colorado’s Broomfield Event Center on Friday, October 3rd. Superstar Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg (18-6) controlled the action against Falaniko “Niko” Vitale (26-9) for three consecutive rounds to notch a unanimous judges’ decision victory.

Morgan, who stopped Ludwig in 52 seconds when they faced off three years ago, took Ludwig down early in the first. Ludwig stood up shortly thereafter, though, and began to find his mark with his left hook and right hand.

A hard left hand to the body from Ludwig staggered Morgan. Ludwig followed up with a hard right hand to the head that put Morgan on his knees. Still on his feet, Ludwig blasted the downed Morgan with a left hand to the midsection.

Ludwig dropped into Morgan’s guard and began tagging Morgan with a flurry of blows. Morgan turned on to his side in an effort to escape the barrage, but Ludwig continued the heavy offensive until Morgan verbally submitted at the 2:01 mark of the first round.

Trigg, a former NCAA wrestling stud and 2000 Olympic wrestling trials finalist, showed off his stand-up combat skills, repeatedly backing Vitale into the cage and setting up flurries of elbows and right hands with a straight left hand, followed by a hard knee to the head. Vitale attempted to counter each time, but Trigg either controlled Vitale’s arms against the fence or back pedaled out of harm’s way.

In the third round, Trigg scooped his opponent up and slammed him, but was unable to make any headway on the ground.

Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson (5-2) made good on her promise of an explosive fight and also made it a short night for Tyra Parker (0-2). After scoring a straight right hand that stunned Parker, Waterson backed her opponent into the corner and began unloading knees to Parker’s face while the two were clinched.

Parker escaped, but made the mistake of turning her back, which allowed Waterson to latch on and sink in a choke. With the hold firmly intact, Waterson brought Parker to the ground and produced a submission at 1:20 of the opening round.

ShoXC Results: Wilson Reis is EliteXC's first 140 pound champ

shoxc.JPG

Here are results from last night's ShoXC event (which I lost track of because of the presidential debate and the Bill Maher show afterwards) courtesy of MMAWeekly.com:

  • Wilson Reis def. Abel Cullum by unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 49-46)
  • Shane Del Rosario def. Carl Seumanutafa by TKO
  • David Douglas def. Malaipet by TKO
  • Jaime Jara def. Giva Santana by split decision
  • Erik Apple def. Matt Makowski by submission (rear naked choke)
  • Scott Lighty def. Jamiah Williamson by TKO
  • Damian Douglas def. Joe Schilling by submission
  • Fernando Bettega def. Mono Otero by submission

Showtime makes a habit of re-airing their EliteXC programming, so be on the lookout for re-broadcasts of the event in the future. Along with being interested in the Reis-Cullum title fight, I'm also intrigued by the TKO of the highly vaunted Muay Thai specialist, Malaipet.

Full results courtesy of MMAFrenzy.com.

I watched the televised portion of the card and thought it was a great evening of fights.

Brad Pickett continues to be on a roll. He has now won his last five fights and is definitely a performer. His entrances are classic and his fights never allow for a boring moment. He is definitely deserving of a title shot against Robbie Olivier.

John Hathaway is a stud. He dominated Ross Mason for the entire fight. Hathaway has some sick power. Make sure you remember his name, because at 10-0 he will probably be Stateside before we know it. Here is video of their fight:

McSweeney will probably be fighting for the newly-vacated Cage Rage heavyweight title. A champion will have to be decided, since former champ Mustafa Al-Turk signed with the UFC.That knee that McSweeney finished Roman Webber with was textbook and even though the fight only lasted 10 seconds, Webber looked like he had gone 10 minutes.
