Dana White: Carano in the WEC and Calls to Fedor

dana_white.jpg

Pleasant developments on two fronts, according to Dana White. Tidbits from 660News.com:

On Gina Carano:

White said he is thinking of inviting Gina Carano to fight in the WEC. Carrano had been fighting in the now defunct EliteXC. "Gina Carano is a star, I think she's talented. I think she's got all the tools, so what I'm willing to do is bring Gina into the WEC. We could do fights whenever there's a challenger for Gina. That's how I'll test the waters and see how it goes." In the past, White has dismissed talk of having women fight in his organization, saying there wasn't enough talent out there.

On Fedor Emelianenko:

White said he had his lawyer call heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko's representatives as recently as Monday to see about getting him into the UFC. The UFC president also said in all his attempts to secure the services of the Russian, he has never actually managed to meet him.

Zuffa has the market dominance to do pretty much whatever it wants. If White wants these two fighters and he's willing to meet Fedor especially half-way, he can have them both.

I'm most pleased with the WEC development. Subtract the two heavier divisions (done) and replace them with the burgeoning women's game and keep the fights on Versus. Fantastic deal for MMA fans.

thank you dana for doing

thank you dana for doing what seems like a very logical thing and trying to integrate female mma into the wec

I don't know about the rest

I don't know about the rest of you but I am more excited about Gina Carano than I am about Fedor. Nothing against the big Russian but I have thoroughly enjoyed Carano's fights and for that matter all of the women's bouts I have seen. Big boost for the WEC as well. This will give them that niche that will help expand their brand. You will not only pull the female fans in but you will also pull in the average MMA male fan wanting to see what Carano is all about as well as the obvious curiosity about how hot she looks in her fighting gear!

This is good. I'm glad to

This is good. I'm glad to see that Dana White is still talking about bringing Fedor in, but I think that Fedor will wait until the end of the heavyweight tournament before signing anything. If Nog wins, then he really has no reason to sign, as he has nothing to prove against Nog.

I figured the WEC announcement would happen. They had to add something as they were taking out two weightclasses, and Gina and Cyborg are huge names now.

i hope that its bigger than

i hope that its bigger than just gina carano though

maybe they pick up other fighters like julie kedzie or roxanne modafferi ... the point is, as much as i want to see women in the wec, i dont want zuffa to hang its hopes solely on carano's drawing power ... i dont want the sport for women to take a hit if she gets petruzellied

besides gina is on the heavier side for most female fighters, i dont believe there is a huge pool of fighters her size... if you want a deeper talent pool, you need to look under 135
