UFC 88 live-blog

Rashad_Evans_feature_1.jpg

FightTicker.com's Bryan Levick (aka KingLev) is back live-blogging tonight's UFC 88 card, which emanates from Atlanta, Georgia. The event is headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans. Check back here around 10 PM ET for full coverage of all the televised bouts.

Click refresh on your browser (or F5 on your keyboard) for constant updates.

Welcome everyone to the UFC 88 preview. I'd like to welcome all the new members of this site I think you will enjoy the witty banter as well as the intelligent, amusing and informative reports that make this site what it is. This PPV has no titles on the line but I believe there are two fights in particular that have title implications on the line.

Fight Previews

In the main event we have:

Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans-Light Heavyweight

I have made it relatively clear that I believe Liddell will receive a title shot vs. Forrest Griffin in December with a victory here. The same can not be said for Rashad Evans although a victory for him here would be very impressive. Evans is tailor made for Liddell as he is a very strong wrestler but does not have impressive stand up or submission skills. Liddell thrives against wrestlers as he has one of the best sprawls in MMA today. Will Evans be able to withstand one of Liddell's bombs? We will find out tonight.

Rich Franklin vs. Matt Hamill-Light Heavyweight

Here we have Franklin's return to the LHW division where he hasn't fought since knocking out Ken Shamrock on The Ultimate Finale 1. I don't know the reasoning behind his move nack to 205 other than he is the 2nd best MW and can not get past the best in Anderson Silva. Hamill is a fantastic wrestler with awesome strength who I believe has shown improvement in his overall game each and every time out. He knocked out Tim Boetsch i nthe 2nd round at UFC Fight Night in April. This is another classic striker vs. wrestler with Franklin's superior striking going up against Hamill's great wrestling.

Dan Henderson vs. Rousimar Palhares-Middleweight

Henderson is looking to rebound off of two straight losses upon his re-entry into the UFC. Not that those two losses came against slouches as he lost a tough Light Heavyweight unification bout in a 5 round decision against a bigger Rampage Jackson and after that he lost via a 2nd round submission to P4P king Anderson Silva. Henderson is as tough as they come and Palhares will have his hands full. Palhares had quite the impressive debut at UFC 84 submitting veteran Ivan Salaverry in round 1. Palhares is a member of the famed Brazilian Top Team and will offer a strong test for Henderson.

Nate Marquardt vs. Martin Kampmann-Middleweight

This is the second fight I feel has title implications. Kampmann was due to fight Franklin in the main event of UFC 72 but was injured and replaced by Yushin Okami. Big things have been expected of him as he has excellent striking skills to go along with very underrated submission skills. He is training with Extreme Couture and that will only enhance his skills. Marquardt is coming off a loss to Thales Leites in which he was penalized two points for various offenses otherwise he would have won that fight. Marquardt the former King of Pancraese is a very dangerous fighter and this one should have plenty of fireworks.

Dong Hyun Kim vs. Matt Brown-Welterweight

I believe Kim is the clear favorite here as he has a nice combination of kick boxing skills to go along with his wrestling. In his UFC debut he defeated Jason Tan at UFC 84 in the third round via TKO by elbows. Brown is what I consider a journeyman fighter. He is very tough and won't go down easy but he doesn't have any overwhelming skills. In his lone UFC victory he defeated Matt Arroyo via TKO at the Ultimate Fighter finale following his stint on season 7.

Thiago Tavares vs. Kurt Pelligrino-Lightweight

Tavares is coming off a surprising loss to Matt Wiman at UFC 75 via 2nd round knockout. He has been up and down thus far in the UFC with a 3-2 record. He has good Muy Thai skills and submission skills as well. Pelligrino is another fighter who has been up and down in the UFC with a 4-3 record. His last loss was to Nate Diaz via triangle choke. He was winning the fight until he got caught and the whole world watched as Nate Diaz held him in the choke and flexed his arms adding further humiliation to the loss. Pelligrino has very good BJJ skills and is also a solid wrestler.

Tim Boetsch vs. Michael Patt-Light Heavyweight

Boetsch made a big splash in the UFC by rag dolling and defeating David Heath at UFC 81 on short notice. He then took on Matt Hamill in a fight that people thought would be closer but Hamill dominated and derailed the Boetsch express for the time being. Patt is 12-2 and has fought a few times in the now defunct BodogFight promotion. His affiliation is listed as The Meat Truck Inc.? He seems to have good submissions as 9 of his 12 wins come via armbar or some form of choke.

Jason Lambert vs. Jason MacDonald-Middleweight

This will be Lambert's first fight at 185 and it won't be easy. MacDonald lost a tough fight to Demian Maia at UFC 87 not even a month ago. MacDonald has great submissions and is a very tough fighter to knock out. It will be interesting to see if Lambert loses any of his power with the weight drop or will he gain some speed to go along with his knock out power?

Roan Carneiro vs. Ryo Chonan-Welterweight

Carneiro is a BJJ expert with a UFC record of 2-2. He lost a tough fight last time out to Kevin Burns at UFC 85 which was surprising as he is a black belt and lost to a brown belt via triangle choke. Chonan is a crafty veteran who holds one of the most interesting flying scissor heel hook victories I have ever seen against Anderson Silva back in 2004 when both men fought in Pride. He last lost a lethargic uneventful unanimous decision to Karo Parisyan at UFC 78 in November. These two have faced off before in the Deep organization in 2005. Chonan was victorious due to a cut suffered by Carneiro which ended the fight in the 3rd round. Should be an interesting fight.

There you have the run down we are missing one fight which was Yoshida vs. Parisyan that was scrapped yesterday due to a back injury suffered by Karo. Feel free to leave any comments along the way and I will be back at 10pm eastern to blog the live fights.

Fight Results

Here are the results of the undercard fights that have been completed thus far:

Ryo Chonan defeated Roan Carneiro by split decision

Jason MacDonald defeated Jason Lambert via rear naked choke at 1:20 of rd 2.

Tim Boetsch defeated Mike Patt by TKO via strikes at 2:03 of rd 1.

Kurt Pellegrino defeats Thiago Tavares via unanimous decison.

First fight of the night:

Dyong Hung Kim vs. Matt Brown-Welterweight

Round 1 starts as both fighters meet in the middle, Brown throws a punch and misses and Kim hits a left and trips Brown to the canvas. Brown gets back to his feet and has Kim on his back looking for a rear naked choke. Brown momentarily shakes Kim off but Kim hops right back on but is not able to do any damage. Brown in Kim's guard while standing he nails a body shot and both fighters are back on their feet. Kim tries again to trip Brown but fails. Brown pushes Kim against the cage and evetually gets Kim down and has part of Kim back and looks for a rear naked choke of his own but is unssuccesful. The round ends with Kim back on Brown's back.

My power is going in and out due to the storm we have over here. I know Kim won a split decision. I hope the power stays on, if it's not my internet it's the power I have no luck!!!

Next fight is:

Nate Marquardt vs. Martin Kampmann-Middleweight

First minute was a feeling out process and then bam Marquardt landed a sick knee followed up with some combinations. Body shots and uppercuts did Kampmann in. It started off with a headkick, Mrquardt was on tonight very methodical and he made all his shots count. He was relentless, wow that was impressive. Winner by TKO at 1:22 of round 1 Nate Marquardt.

Up next is Dan Henderson vs. Rousimar Palhares-Middleweight

My power is going in and out due to the storm that has hit the area, a friend of mine lives about 5 minutes away and says streets are flooded and trees are down. Anyway, Dan Henderson won this fight via unanimous decision. He fought a safe fight opting to strike and stay away from Palhares on the ground due to his BJJ skills. In fact there were a few occasions where Palhares was able to trap Henderson in a few leg locks but Henderson was able to escape each time. It was a good win for Henderson after losing his last two fights.

Editor's note: Rich Franklin defeated Matt Hamill by TKO in the third round using a nice left body kick that hurt Hamill badly and eventually led to the stoppage. In the main event, Rashad Evans defeated Chuck Liddell by KO in the second round using a devastating overhand right that knocked Liddell out on his way down.

Even though he had a good fight with Silva you have to remember Silva had not had a win in like 2 or 3 years and Chuck is a average fighter lately so it may have been just to evenly matched guys that a lot of guys could beat in the cage?

depends on the timeframe

rampage looks to be fighting either shogun or wanderlei
machida might be free if the thiago silva fight isnt bumped to a later date

my thought is machida ends up being the most deserving but who knows if the ufc gives him the shot because he isnt really a draw and his fights dont tend to excite everyone

205 is a mess right now!

205 is a mess right now! Chuck has lost 3 of his last 4 fights, Rampage is crazy, Tito unsigned, Wanderlai's 1-1, I guess it's Thiago Silva vs. Evans winner gets Forrest. Not big on the mainstream draw. And Chuck needs to change up a little, he can't do that crappy counter game especially against Greg Jackson's guys. He should've went for a take down, that would've messed Rashaad all up in the head.

How about a undefeated LHW that has a win over Chuck and is the season 2 Ultimate Fighter winner?

Hendo vs. Marquadt should

Hendo vs. Marquadt should happen

Rampage is not crazy but LHW is a mess in the middle right now

Griffin should face Machida at 92 regardless of marketablity, if you're UFC you market it regardless of Machida's appeal. It'll only be co-main anyways.

Evans should wait for Thiago

Rampage vs. Wandy at 91 and Shogun vs. Soko (after he wins at 89) at 92 should go down

Guys I am sorry, my power

Guys I am sorry, my power came back on like 15 minutes ago at least my kids were already sleeping so they had no clue. I just read that Evans is getting the next shot at Griffin, he certainly deserves it.

I don't understand how at

I don't understand how at the time you didn't give Jardine a title shot when he beat Chuck, you gave a guy who Jardine beat the title shot? Also, if Chuck really is in a decline and that's Rashad's only good win, how does he deserve a title shot? I hope the UFC views that fight as what it was, Rashad had a punchers chance in that fight and he hit it.

Wow. We've got surly Phoenix today. I take it the Evans win ruined your weekend? It was tough to watch but I give Evans credit for doing what he had to do...

Did you see the Franklin

Did you see the Franklin Hamill fight? Ace may have landed a few more shots but Matt landed way more power shots, and if it had not been for the body kick I'm sure it prob would have been a split dec it may have went to my boy.

And I'm tired of people liking Kimbo because he fought on youtube, Bruce Lee because everything he was doing was around before him, and Chuck just because he used to be good.

This is MMA, not BJJ, not kick boxing, not Thai, not what you want it to be.

You can win by KO, TKO, SUB, doctor stopage, ref stopage, cornar stopage, or by the score cards.

A good game plan is a good game plan plain and simple, and just like MMA developed from no rules to what it is, we see more and more people using there heads and not letting people who just want to stand in front of them win.
