Karo Parisyan injured, UFC 88 bout with Yoshida scrapped

karo_parisyan.jpg

From UFC.com:

A last-minute back injury has forced welterweight contender Karo Parisyan to withdraw from his UFC 88 bout with Yoshiyuki Yoshida. Saturday’s UFC 88 card (pay-per-view 10pm ET / 7pm PT) will continue with nine bouts.

This makes three disappointments in a row for Parisyan. Although he defeated Ryo Chonan at UFC 78 last year, he looked out of shape and had gassed by the end of the fight. Then came the flash knockout loss to Thiago Alves this past April. Now, the back injury.

One has to wonder if conditioning and general training habits are an issue for Parisyan. Although he's a veteran of 12 UFC fights dating back to 2003, he's only 26 and should thus be in the prime of his fighting/athletic career. Instead, we've seen him out of shape and now injured in the past year.

After once being considered a top contender in the UFC welterweight division (including being the number one contender before an injury forced him out of a title fight against Matt Hughes at UFC 56), Parisyan's last year of problems have pushed him back to the pack. Now, it remains to be seen whether he can jumpstart his career and break out of his recent slump to fulfill the high expectations once placed on him.

How can you hurt your back

How can you hurt your back at the last minute? Maybe he was way overweight and he was working hard trying to cut it?

What a disappointment for

What a disappointment for Yoshida. To put in all of that training, then all of a sudden, the day before your fight, your opponent pulls out with some type of back injury.

Yeah sucks for Yoshida (and

Yeah sucks for Yoshida (and the fans). But I think Karo is overtraining or something (perhaps cutting too much weight actually). Funny this guy was trained by Couture and Ortiz (at the same time at one point) and has never gotten over the hump. Him and his cousin Manny Gamburian seem to suffer from these weird injuries. Maybe they need a better diet or something! lol

I hadn't heard that. That's too bad if that's the case. I hope he can get it together and come back strong...

Thanks King. Man, it sounds like Karo's dealing with some issues and put a lot of pressure on himself for UFC 88. I wonder how this injury is going to affect him mentally...
