Rookie Watch: Roger Gracie to fight at Sengoku 5
Numerous sources are stating that World Victory Road (WVR) has announced that heavyweight BJJ phenom Roger Gracie will be fighting at Sengoku 5 on Sept. 28 at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.
Gracie is only 2-0 in MMA but his exploits in submission grappling competitions are quite storied. His first MMA victory came against veteran Ron Waterman in a 2006 BodogFight event. Gracie won in the first-round, submitting Waterman with an armbar.
Earlier this year, Gracie submitted a smaller Yuki Kondo via first-round rear naked choke at Sengoku 2.
Here is what John Rallo, himself a Renzo Gracie black belt heavyweight, told FightTicker.com about Gracie a few months ago:
"I helped him prepare for his fight with Ron Waterman. I also wrestled with him for about 30 to 40 minutes to get my Black Belt on my promotion night.
"He is the Gracie family champion right now. Yes, if he decided to focus on MMA he would be a force. I think he may even be able to get to 205 [pounds]. Even with minimal training if it hit the floor I believe he would tap [former UFC light heavyweight champ] Quinton [Jackson]."

Given the UFC's push to develop up-and-coming heavyweight talent, Gracie would seem like a perfect fit. Maybe the UFC will pick him off if he wins a couple of more fights...
