I was going to write a full

I was going to write a full review of Crigger's "Title Shot," but he did a good job of overviewing the main points in his interview. It's similar to Sheridan's "A Fighter's Heart" in the sense that like Sheridan, Crigger visited a bunch of different camps to answer a few questions about the sport. But Sheridan's book is different in that he actually trained (and sometimes competed) for lengthy periods in camps around the world in order to tell the story through his own experiences. Crigger on the other hand goes through some practices and stays with each camp for a week or so and tells the story through his observations and the fighters/trainers he speaks with and rolls with a bit.

Yup, his main themes are trying to figure out why fighters fight (and as he says in his interview, he identifies no definitive answer), and his analysis of what he calls the "hype machine." The "hype machine" is basically the MMA media, which he says distorts the image of MMA fighters and the sport as a whole. He shows how MMA organizations, MMA media sites, and fighters all contribute to it because they know what sells.

Crigger's book doesn't have nearly as much depth as "A Fighter's Heart," but I don't think it was meant to. It's a fun, easy read with some interesting comparisons between camps and their different philosophies on training. The funniest line was this, when he was describing TUF 1 poster: "On a back wall I found a poster of The Ultimate Fighter season one finale with photos of all the contestants. Of the sixteen fighters, fifteen stared ferociously at the camera with their best 'Zoolander Blue Steel' face, except one - Kenny Florian. It was appropriate for how Sityodtong operated - the only smiling face in the middle of a group of snarling pit bulls" (p. 123).

He also makes interesting analogies of MMA camps to the military hierarchy, and I think MMA fans will enjoy reading about the training styles of elite MMA camps.
