"Is the UFC helping or hurting its cause by hosting a show the same day as Affliction?"
This question was posed to me by the folks at MixedMartialArts.com.
Since I was in a good mood, I answered their question in complete English sentences, rather than my secretly preferred method of communication -- screams and grunts.
Here are the first two paragraphs of my response:
I've read that some MMA fans are complaining about this move by the UFC. But isn't this where we all hoped the sport would end up one day -- at a point where there was enough viable competition that the UFC would feel it was necessary to do something like this?
I don't care which promotion gives us quality matchups as long as we see fights that we care about. On July 19, MMA fans are being presented with two excellent cards and plenty of matchups to care about -- one on pay-per-view and one on SpikeTV.

Great post Pramit! I
Great post Pramit! I agree... I like when the UFC has to fight for my viewership. In the end, we all win.
Heh - Dana is claiming that
Heh - Dana is claiming that the July 19th card has NOTHING to do with Affliction or counter-programming. Really?
http://www.usatoday.com/community/profile.htm?plckPersonaPage=PersonaBlo...
"White denied such reasons of counter-programming, claiming, instead, that more fights is simply "giving the fans what they want. And Silva just wants to fight more," he said."
"UFC President Dana White has denied that the sudden decision to air a July 19 show is targeted specifically at Affliction"
We all know DW is full of
We all know DW is full of it, but as Pramit said we should be happy. Think about it in the past month we have had some really good action. The past few weekends gave us two EXC shows, UFC 85, Adrenaline MMA, this weekend we have Ultimate Fighter Finale. We are getting spoiled to the point where we are complaining there is too much for us to watch, did any of us envision this 2 years ago or even last year?

King, I envisioned this
King, I envisioned this coming. I was sitting there 2 years ago with a case of beer and some Canadian bacon and thought to myself, 2 years from now we are going to be spoiled with so much to watch. I didn't write it down or anything so you have to take my word for it.

Everything in the world was not invented by the USA. Egyptians were the first to use a type of paper. They also used it well before 2 years ago. So unless Egypt is a city in Texas then Phoenix is a big fat liar!

This is kind of a dumb move
This is kind of a dumb move on Dana's part I think. Cool for the fans, but starting a feud is stupid (he didn't do this with EliteXc b/c he knew they were a joke!) But we can get spoiled, that is what happened to boxing, too many organizations, too many belts, etc... I mean it gets good for a short period of time, but every organization will have a different PPV event every month (UFC already does) which is where MMA makes most of its money. Or they'll have their own home on premium cable channels and have PPV's. I mean the UFC is not making their PPV free in July are they? So we'll still have to pay for 2 events and watch the "free event" (we pay for cable/satellite to). That does not include any other event. I love MMA and love watching it but I am worried that they are going to end up going down a bad path. And Dana will probably hurt the sport more than help it. If you want to know why the UFC Heavyweight Division is so weak, look at the Affliction card! He refused to sign all of those guys and bad mouthed them as well. Bad for the sport.

My question is, Why is the 4.3% responding on an MMA website that neither card is worth their time? IF you think Silva free is not worth your time then you are an idiot!!!!!!!

I would guess these are non-MMA fans who've somehow stumbled onto the MMA page...I've seen these sorts of readers leave negative comments about the sport on MMA blogs etc... A lot of free time, I guess...

Not going to say where I
Not going to say where I heard it (lets just say it was on a board where I learned of this one and many of you had to change your screennames!) but alot of people are leaning towards either the UFC or saying both cards suck! Well Silva for free or free UFC normally will satisfy the typical MMA fan. As far as Affliction goes I still like that card! Interesting match ups. I don't like either Tim or Fedor but I want to see the fight (wow rooting for Tim can't believe it!). Like you guys said they are not MMA fans or they are worse... Kimbo fans!
i hate sylvia but i want to
i hate sylvia but i want to see what fedor has, that is really the only reason i am going to pay for this. i dont know who i want to win this.
i'm moderately interested in arlovsky, more to see if he shows more aggression than he has in the recent past. other than that, it doesnt really do it for me. but i dont like the HW division to begin with. if this was some kind of card that featured every other weightclass other than HW, i would be more excited. the most exciting thing about this card is that the perceived best HWs in the world aren't in the UFC (unlike every other weightclass).
this affliction card is supposedly a hardcore fan's dream ... well, i dont consider myself hardcore, nor do i care for HWs so its more to satisfy curiosity than anything else.
Interesting points Bosco. As
Interesting points Bosco. As stacked as Affliction is in the HW division this card is missing the one fight everyone really wants to see and the one fight that could draw big PPV numbers" Randy vs. Fedor.
In that sense, the UFC has already succeeded with all this litigation. If Fedor loses to Syvlia, that fight loses its luster.
I'd also like to see Couture fight Big Nog and Cro Cop but at this point, I don't see that happening unless he re-signs with the UFC...
