Adam Swift's post on MMA Payout: "UFC 83 Review: Breaking Kayfabe"
Did you read Adam Swift's post on MMA Payout: "UFC 83 Review: Breaking Kayfabe"
I interpreted GSP's comments regarding him and Serra as "saying things just to hype up the fight" as an easy way to squash any animosity. I never really thought that they had intentionally built up some fictional hostility, partially because the development of their issues was very reasonable, and partially because it never manifested as anything close to some WWE type drama. What did you think? Did you think that GSP's initial display of integrity but eventually saying that he underestimated/overlooked Serra was staged in order to establish a basis for some future theatrical ill will?
I'm not suggesting that these theatrics don't occur, I just don't think this was an example of them. You can count on Tito Ortiz building this sort of hyperbolic antagonism every time. What were some other extreme examples?
Which brings me to another issue with Swift's post. He indicates that the reason Ortiz/Shamrock and Liddell/Ortiz did so well as opposed to A. Silva/Henderson, was because of the off stage/cage antics, or at least story building. I'm not suggesting that building a story, especially a dramatic one, doesn't help peak interest, but I think using these as examples overlooks the incredible name recognition that these fighters had at the time, especially compared to Silva/Henderson.

the piece, as its written,
the piece, as its written, is trying to reaching to draw similarities to pro-wrestling, even going so far as to use "insider" terms like keyfabe and calling the hype a "fued" or "storyline" ...
the hype helps sell a payper view and create build up, but its not a laid out storyline. there aren't weekly cable shows to plug a pay per view. there arent run ins and there arent screw jobs (maybe some bad scoring here and there but its not like pro-wrestling).
the things between serra and gsp are likely just 2 guys reacting to how things came out in the media. gsp got sick of people dogging him about losing and said the things he said. serra got annoyed and said the things he said.
i dont believe there was any faking, if anything they just used the media to vent more than "being totally professional" would have dictated. if there wasn't a ppv coming up, maybe they wouldnt have said it to the media but i think they still felt what they said at the time.
I agree. I also think that
I agree. I also think that the point of the fight is to resolve everything that's been said and felt leading up to it. So, why harbor those feelings after the fight? I think it makes sense that they would be willing to bury the hatchet once the fight is over...It doesn't always work out that way (Clementi-Guillard) but it makes sense when it does...Both Serra and GSP seem seem responsible and fairly mature...
Its called life! gossip! He

He said She said!
Thats why Jackson said he doesn't like that stuff, and he thinks GSP is a strong guy, LOL!
If Birdman were to say he was gonna kick my butt, I would have to respond, it is human nature.

i think the only person to
i think the only person to really take if over the top is Tito.
him pushing rashad at the prior UFC event was just a shameless plug for his fight.
i'd say 90% of the time people are just responding (and almost over-reacting) to things said in the media.
most of the time it goes something like this...
fighter A gets asked why he thinks he can beat fighter B.
fighter A says that he's faster, stronger, has more experience etc
fighter B trains his ass off so he says that fighter A has a big mouth
fighter A takes it personally and says fighter B is a scrub
etc, etc etc. drama drama drama.
