Jordy and the Other Guy

One of the cool things about writing about this sport is that I've had the opportunity to be a guest on a few radio shows. Jeff Hamlin, the Sports Director down at WCHL 1360 AM in North Carolina, was the first guy to have me on over a year ago.

This morning I was a guest on a sports talk show down in Louisiana called "Jordy and the Other Guy" (the other guy is Brad) which airs on 1210 AM The Score. It was my second appearance on the show and I have a lot of fun with this stuff because I just love talking about the sport. I consider myself a writer first but any opportunity to talk MMA is very cool with me.

It was my first time taking live calls from listeners and in addition to previewing UFC 83 I also took two calls during my 20 minute appearance -- one was a question about Fedor coming to the UFC and the other was a question about Kimbo Slice's CBS debut. Louisiana loves its MMA and the fans down there are quite knowledgeable about the sport.

As many of you may know, the state is represented by Rich Clementi at UFC 83 tomorrow night and by Melvin Guillard at UFC 86.

Thanks to Brad and Jordy for having me on again and welcome to the listeners of their show who have made their way onto FightTicker.com.

Next time I'll let you guys know when I'm on the radio. Some of these stations have internet live streams that you can listen to even if you don't live in the broadcast area of the station. The Score is one such station.

Check out 1210 AM The Score when you get a chance and give them some Fight Ticker love!

I hate doing plugs but I got in one mention (I might have even apologized before doing it...sigh). I tried to promote the fact that members like Lev and Brat get the opportunity to have their great work published on this site, which is rare I think right now.

Thankfully they were really cool and mentioned the site a few times on their own and it seemed like they'd checked it out quite a bit before the show.

Yeah it would be...Get us

Yeah it would be...Get us the Mardi Gras hookup!!!

They told me last time that sometimes they archive segments online and sometimes they don't. I don't believe they archived my segment. If they did, I'll let you know.

I knew about the appearance a couple of days ago. I just go so busy I forgot to mention it.

It sounds like they want me back on so I'll give you the heads up next time.

I called James Thompson a "colossal bust" because one of the hosts said he liked his nickname -- "Colossus". That was probably the best "oh no he didn't" moment of the show...lol

did the hosts know what they

did the hosts know what they were talking about though? i guess if there was one thing possible to like about james thompson is his nickname...

I think one of the guys

I think one of the guys knows quite a bit and the other is learning. They both seem to love the sport. It's rare to even find radio shows that devote any time to MMA so the fact that they spent the amount of time that they did (on a big station) speaks volumes.

I appreciate that and I look at the appearances as an opportunity to educate the listeners and the hosts.

Also, as hardcore as this site is, you have to remember most fans of the sport aren't nearly as hardcore and most people in the country have no clue about the sport at all. So, if they went too deep, they risk losing their listeners. It's a process.

matt hughes was on the radio

matt hughes was on the radio in LA, and the hosts knew close to nothing about MMA. i'm like, you 2 are retarded!! but that's how i found out hughes was gonna be in torrance doing a book signing.

Nice job Ticker!! Positive

Nice job Ticker!! Positive discussion about MMA on the radio IS rare!! I listen to sports radio (ESPN Radio 1380AM in Seattle/Everett area) in the mornings on my way to work, and on rare occasion 'The Herd' Colin Cowherd talks a little MMA and is always very positive. Actually he is quite hard on ESPN in general and ESPN radio for NOT talking MMA more often...

Its a little insulating chatting about MMA on here... most of my friends who like MMA (outside of people at the gym) couldnt even name more than one champion in the UFC, much less top challengers outside of maybe a Chuck Liddell or possibly a few know Frank Shamrock and of course Tito Ortiz - certainly all know Kimbo Slice - haha!!

Thanks Sixtus. I agree. I

Thanks Sixtus. I agree. I think it's easy to lose perspective when you are on a site like this or the other hardcore sites. We are not only a fraction of the overall population, we are actually a fraction of mma fans as well. Most mma fans don't think about the sport as much as everyone on this site even though they love the sport too...

i can't really talk mma with

i can't really talk mma with anyone else either. they know next to nothing...thanks internet!
