Just say no to Favre rumors
Can we please put the Brett Favre "coming out of retirement" rumors to rest?

Anyone holding out hope that Favre, who retired last month after 17 seasons in the NFL, will change his mind can forget about it. That’s not going to happen.

But it won't stop the media from engaging in idle speculation.

In what will likely be the first of many rumors about Favre coming back, the Los Angeles Times cited unnamed sources declaring Favre's agent, Bus Cook, was quietly inquiring with other NFL teams about their interest in trading for the 38-year-old quarterback.

When reached by ESPN today, Cook vehemently denied the report. "That is absolutely false," Cook said. "Absolutely false, and you can quote me on that."

Packers General Manager Ted Thompson, when reached by the Associated Press, also scoffed at the report. "We don’t know anything about it, and it’s inconceivable," Thompson said.

Anyone who watched Favre at his retirement press conference March 6 knows he is finished. The flame has been extinguished. The fire in his belly no longer exists.

Favre hasn't filed his official retirement papers yet, which might be fueling the idle speculation. But that appears to be a mere formality, and Packers Coach Mike McCarthy even joked about it this week at the NFL owners meetings.

There is absolutely no reason to believe Favre wants to return after he so emphatically said he was finished less than a month ago. But don't be surprised if more claims to the contrary will crop up throughout the off-season.

Favre says he is not coming back

1 hour, 45 minutes ago
NEW YORK (TICKER) —Brett Favre has refuted a report which stated he was having second thoughts about his retirement.

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported the former Green Bay Packers quarterback - who announced his retirement last month - was contemplating a comeback with another team.

Citing NFL sources, the Times reported that Favre had been quietly talking with teams about their interest in trading for the three-time NFL Most Valuable Player.

However, Favre told SI.com on Friday that he is not considering coming out of retirement.

“That’s the last thing I’m thinking about,” Favre said. “I have no idea where it came from, but it certainly didn’t come from me. I’m happy about my decision and I haven’t once said, ‘I wonder if I made the wrong decision.’ I know it’s the right one.”

Favre also was surprised a story surfaced about him returning.

“It’s crazy to me that I’m the guy they’re all talking about, and the story is out there everywhere, and I have nothing to do with it,” Favre told SI.com. “It’s not something I’m thinking about. It’s kind of funny. Even when I’m retired, they won’t let me stay retired.”

On March 4, Favre, who played with the Packers for 16 seasons, announced his retirement during an emotional press conference at Lambeau Field.

Favre, 38, has yet to give written notice of his retirement to the league or players’ union.
