Where do the divisions stand now?

The one thing that I've always enjoyed to talk about with my fellow MMA fans is what they feel the divisions look like and what better time to do it after a televised event. Tonight we had matchups in the lightweight, welterweight and light heavyweight divisions so lets take a peak at see where I think they stand and see where you guys agree/disagree...

  • Lightweights: I suppose we should start where the main event left us, right? We know coming up we got the Penn-Sherk match but what happens after that? To me, I've been saying for a while KenFlo gets the next shot as long as he beats J-Lau. A lot of people like to praise the younger guys but to me they haven't beaten enough names and time wise it won't make much sense. Barring injury you figure the Penn-Sherk winner will be ready again around October-ish. Right now KenFlo is easily ready for that. Otherwise you are looking at possibly Huerta, who isn't rumored to be in any upcoming fights but I doubt he deserves to be handed a shot yet. Edgar lost his shot against Gray Maynard knocking him out. Tyson Griffin's main win was against Edgar and he's rumored to fight in July PPV vs. TBA. Otherwise who knows who else is up there. Based on what happened tonight here's what I'd like to see. KenFlo vs Penn/Sherk, the rematch between Diaz vs. Gamburyan, and potentially Maynard vs. Huerta.
  • Welterweights: Even though I didn't pick it correctly I was almost happy to see Karo get knocked out. A lot of people have been praising Karo saying he potentially deserves the next shot and not Jon Fitch. This shows it's going to be GSP vs. Serra, than Fitch definitely gets the winner of that match. From there it gets potentially interesting. Maybe a Diego Sanchez vs. Thiago Alves match could be in the works and make sense. The wildcard of course is what is Matt Hughes doing with himself. Would be interesting to see where he winds up but what this night did was pretty much flip flop where Karo and Thiago were in the rankings in my mind.
  • Light Heavyweight: Last but least on this night goes to the LHWs. Houston Alexander dug himself a hole further and hopefully will be handed a cupcake next. Irvin potentially could get a decent opponent next, but I wouldn't go overboard quite yet but maybe throw him against Boetsch or someone around there. Hamill is the interesting one here. I was intrigued by the match up with Bonner who was an interesting match up. I'd really like to see that fight next but Hamill could be on his way.

That should take care of this night for the most part. What does everyone else think? Overall a great card and even better that it was free. Throw on top a good season opener of TUF and I had a good night.

Indeed it was a good night.

Indeed it was a good night. This may not have been UFC's absolute top-level superstars but it was still better than anything any other promotion can put out there, by far.

Marcus Aurelio, Manny

Marcus Aurelio, Manny Gamburyan, and Clay Guida all delivered in the undercard (can you believe they were all undercard fighters on a Spike TV card?!) The lightweight division is the deepest one in the UFC by far. Great young talent coming up as well...

Nice post, Captain. Your analysis seems spot on to me. I also think Hamill is intriguing. I don't think he's quite ready to be put into contender status yet, but his learning curve seems very steep. He really gets a lot better every fight. At the moment, he's a great wrestler, really strong and punches hard with passable defense. He clearly shows potential to be a guy with knockout power standing up, great takedown defense and good ground and pound. If he learns some BJJ, he'll be a monster.

Hamill still has a ways to

Hamill still has a ways to go before he should be even talked about in a title shot. Ken FLorian has got to be the next in line for Penn when he is finished with Sherk.

As for Welterweights I don't know if anyone is in St.Pierres league barring a lucky punch. I expect to see him dominate this class for a long long time ala Anderson Silva. Maybe RIch Franklin will cut some weight and give him a go or BJ may jump up but as this weight class stands Georgie boy is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone.

I think Hamill needs a few

I think Hamill needs a few more fights as well. I would like to see him take out someone like Jardine just to make a statement.

Agreed. Jardine makes a

Agreed. Jardine makes a good gate keeper but he better use that wrestling and take Keith down. He doesn't wanna brawl with Jardine like he did last night.
