Hate and Pity: My Relationship with TUF 8

If Dana White has any sense of decency, he will let every MMA fan line up and punch Junie Browning in the face. Hell, he could charge a buck and make a killing.
The reality is, the fights on this season weren’t bad, but it only takes one kick in the proverbial crotch to ruin the experience, and Browning supplied enough to sterilize the Iron Penis kung fu practitioners of China (for all of you Mind, Body and Kickass Moves junkies). Apart from spoiling his entire future in the sport by making himself a laughing stock (retiring after 2 pro fights? really?), while he could have a long and fruitful career as the guy everyone wants to see get the crap kicked out of him, Browning ruined the reputation of the show.
Dana White has said openly that he’s frustrated with the Spike Producers running the show, and while it’s hard to gauge how much influence they have from just watching, if I were Dana, I’d want Spike to fire the jackasses who put that show together. Still, Dana should have thrown Junie off the show, instead of pussyfooting around the issue, but producers should be aware that fans of the sport watch the show to see the sport, not to see the pranks.
The real problem, though, was that Dana failed to do what the preliminaries were intended for: to remove the pussies. To weed out the guys who didn’t want to be there. It seemed that nobody wanted to be there less than Junie Browning. How could Dana not see his ego in the preliminary interviews and say, “Wow, this guy is going to be a problem”? I saw that in the first episode, with all credit to his talent.
You’d think that Dana would have learned from the JT Money fiasco.
Bringing in talentless wastes of time like Jules Bruchez, who are years removed from a debut in the top MMA organization, just tries my patience. If I wanted to watch brawls, I’d pay strippers to flirt with two guys at the bar at the same time, but that’s not why I watch the show. I watch because I want to see the next Kenny Florian and the next Diego Sanchez and the next Forrest Griffin. I want to see fighters who want to push their skills, not ones who want to get drunk and put plates on the tennis court.
The show has devolved, going from fighters with five or ten career fights and respectable skill sets, legitimate talent (if that’s not too audacious to ask for) to fighters who want to be personalities. Some fighters are eccentric, like Forrest, but the Gabe Ruedigers and Andy Wangs of the world shouldn’t be allowed in the TUF gym.
In the third and fourth seasons we saw the infestation of this idea that you can get a career-long MMA gig purely by being a personality on a reality show. While I hope that in the future fighters who have no intent of learning to fight will stick to posting their street brawls on YouTube, it pisses me off that Dana is including them on the show -- that he would even invite Kimbo Slice on the show. Junie Browning was a skinny, white Kimbo Slice; all talk and no talent.
Perhaps I’m a snob, but if wanting to see great fights and up-and-coming talent makes me a snob than I’ll suffer happily under the burden of snobbishness, because there are worse things in life than having high expectations, like watching this last season of the Ultimate Fighter.

My biggest problem with the
My biggest problem with the show is that it doesn't do what it should be doing; showcasing young upcoming talent. Instead it's turned into a reality show with the objective of showing off how out of control a bunch of morons can be. The complete lack of respect for property, trashing the house, trashing other people's belongings and all the associated stupidity just turns me off.
If I had an opportunity like that, you wouldn't find me in the house other than to grab a bite to eat and to sleep. Can you imagine the opportunity to train with the best people MMA has to offer and then squandering it by getting drunk all the time and destroying the house you're living in rent-free? They'd have to throw me out of the gym every night and I'd never stop asking questions and trying to learn as much as I could possibly squeeze out of the veteran trainers and fighters.
Instead of showing that MMA fighters are good people who fight for a living, TUF showcases a bunch of immature thugs who have no appreciation or respect for the opportunity they've been given. I think it's turning into a black eye for the sport despite the ratings. People aren't tuning in to see up and coming fighters, they're tuning in to see what idiotic crap those immature and disrespectful little ingrates will pull next.
Agreed. Spike and the UFC
Agreed. Spike and the UFC can point to ratings all they want but ratings don't necessarily equate to a quality product.
People tune in to watch train wrecks too... At some point, the UFC has to move beyond the "gain exposure at all costs" mentality and consider preserving its brand and the meaning of its brand.
The NFL would never allow a show like this to air on TV.
Hell, even the NHL, which desperately needs attention, suspended Sean Avery for crass, but rather harmless, comments recently...
Yeah, but I don't feel bad
Yeah, but I don't feel bad for Sean Avery. He's a jackass.
Just like I don't feel bad for Junie Browning.
Hell, if I want to be the most loved fighter in the UFC lightweight division, all I'd have to do is make my UFC debut against 155. I'd have to put on some bulk first, but fans would love it.
Like you said, Pramit, they do tune in to watch trainwrecks.
as dumb as this may sound,
as dumb as this may sound, TUF really isnt for people that generally go to these kinds of boards and follow MMA
most people that have issues with TUF are already fans and want to see more fights, not dudes in a house drinking pee
TUF is pretty much working in 2 purposes:
1) getting face time and giving exposure to potential talent (despite stupid house drama bullshit)
2) roping in people that arent already fans with a diluted product that isnt quite UFC mma
i think most established fans dont really care about aspect #2 and dont feel they get enough aspect #1 because it is overshadowed with peeing and general stupidity
everyone has a right to be pissed, but i think its almost like complaining about tampons ... they arent really for me anyway, so i just take it for what it is
