ESPN Outside the Lines: MMA For Kids
Now I'm all for kids learning martial arts.... but whats with the sparing without head gear? And whats with the competitions without head gear? Pretty sad that their not taking care of these kids. There's no reason why MMA cant be safe for kids if the proper precautions are made..

I was thinking of going through all the written and documentary/interview material and then writing something up. I read a little bit though already and saw the child takes a lot of boxing lessons and has amateur competitions, so head shots included. Happens in football/hockey too. Still...

It kind of annoyed me how lopsided the whole story was. Frank did an OK job but wasn't really the ambassibor we needed as a counter point to the bald douche bag on his split screen. Now David Mayeda on the other hand would have been able to debate using facts and statistics and a brain to put the whole situation in perspective. If they didn't want an overly medical approach to it they could have asked someone like our own Pramit to give a fair and balanced overview. In fact anyone of the respected MMA journalists out there would have sufficed. But thats obviously not what espn's Outside the lines show had in mind.
I have seen that too and I
I have seen that too and I really wish someone like Jeff Monson would have been the one used to talk with them instead of Frank Shamrock.
And I have talked just a little with the Machine, is that who you are talking about MMAcademics? he seems like a rock!

Arnie Spanier of The Sporting News Radio is discussing the ESPN piece on kids and MMA now (Outside the Lines). He's saying the piece is pretty brutal and that the kids shown in this documentary engage in very serious striking practices to the head. I haven't watched the OTL piece yet. Has anyone else seen it?
