US Open Update
For any of you that are golf fans Tiger Woods just one of the most competitive US Open's ever. They played 18 holes of extra golf today and then were even after those holes were completed. He won in sudden death, he did all this on a sore knee that was operated on not too long ago.

Tiger Tiger Woods y'all!!!!
golf is not a sport! how did he get a sore knee? did he try carrying his own golf bag for once?

We had another spirited thread on this but I agree, golf isn't a sport -- it's a skill. Which is why someone as athletic as Tiger Woods (who could probably play another sport) is just cleaning up...There's no one close to him in the game..
...i could care less if tiger won another golf tournament.
golf is stupid because they're not really playing against their opponents. they play against the golf course.
yes, obviously they might play harder if they need to make up a stroke or two but it's not direct competition.
iamphoenix, you crack me up. in some ways, i was saying the same thing, watching him yesterday and the commentators making it sound he was donovan mcnabb playing in stellar fashion with a broken leg. i mean, it's just not the same in golf.
at the same time, you gotta respect that guy's focus. i've been at the airport following him and mediate today online, and i gotta say he is one of the toughest athletes in all of sports. weird, cause i don't even respect golf from a sporting aspect since there's not a cardio dimension to it. but i still think his toughness is crazy.
I would put this in a category like bike riding. You have to give props to Lance Armstrong, but that is not a sport, it's a competition of skill.

yeah, i remember...academics was like blah blah blah...haha
but seriously, how do you get a sore knee in golf? did it happen during the ride on the cart to the next hole? did he put too much on his swing?

i don't know how you define 'tough'. if someone tasered him every time he shot the golf ball and then he won, i'd call him tough. 'tough' is not swinging a piece of metal at a stationary object with a sore knee.
mmm...i don't like bike riding but i would say that's a sport because they're freakin riding their bikes across an entire country. that takes super cardio.
i do remember that tiger woods would request to be triangle choked after every time he got a whole in one...

I remember once watching Chad Johnson try to golf on SportsCenter. It was hilarious. He was trying ... not taking it very seriously ... but trying to some degree. And he just kept slicing it and getting all frustrated.
ocho cinco is crazzzzy. for some reason i like him and not T.O. maybe because he wasn't the one who caught the game winning TD in a playoff game...

I golf about four or five times a month, and I picked it up after my athletic career stalled out. It's fun to get out and play. For a guy like me, that shoots in the high 90's, it's definately a pasttime. I enjoy going out with my dad, brothers and cousins to play a round every week. We all have a few beers while we play. It's kind of tough to do that in a sporting contest. My dad is an assistant pro at a course in northern New Jersey. He took this job after he retired from his job at AT&T, and after he had surgeries to remove the meniscus out of both knees. He played basketball his entire life, just like me, but if he tried to take a 15 foot jump shot now, his legs would buckle under him. Yet he maintains a quality lifestyle via golf. He shoots in the upper 70's, and has gone to Qualifying school twice in Florida. He hasn't quite made it yet, but he's on the cusp of becoming a professional golfer as a 58 year old man with NO MENISCUS IN EITHER KNEE. This is just further proof that golf isn't quite a sport.
On the other hand, watching Tiger work his way back into the US Open on Sunday with that unreal putt on 18, then coming back on Rocco Mediate yesterday was truly an accomplishment. The guy is a machine. Watching this guy is something we will be able to appreciate only after he is gone. "We watched Tiger at the 2008 US Open...". He truly is awesome.
That's very cool TBC. I have mad respect for what golfers do since I've tried on a few occasions and never had real success. There is something very sweet about hitting a golf ball's sweet spot and watching it fly down the fairway...
That sucks about your dad's knees. I'm a lifelong bballer as well and my knees (at 33) are also starting to betray me... I've learned to play smart and not rely on jumping as much...
Ahh, the John-Stockton-grab-a-jersey-defense? I am very familiar. My brothers and cousins are all at least three years younger than I am. At 31, I just don't move as well as I did. I have a torn PCL in my left knee, and a slight tear of my MCL in my right. Just haven't had time to get them fixed. Getting older has led me to appreciate the paint a bit more, too, as I've put on 20 pounds since my playing days. It's a lot easier banging down there weighing 210 against my ten year old than it was against guys my own age who outweighed me by 40 pounds.
You are totally correct about pairing a golf ball down the fairway, too. Making perfect contact one time out of 90 shots gets me to go back out every week. Just making perfect contact on a golf ball makes me think, "next week, I can do that five more times, I'll take eight strokes off my game". Never quite works out that way, though.
TBC - What course is your dad a pro at? I live in northern jersey (Oak Ridge) and try to get out as much as possible. Just bought a house so the finances are a little strapped but I do what I can.

Interestingly enough, I think I'm actually playing better (on offense and defense) now that I can't rely completely on athleticism. The older I get the more I realize that there's no substitute for wisdom and experience -- it's too bad you can't have both when your body could actually do wonders with them... I look at the young ballers on the court and I just know they will eventually fold mentally...
Captain - I guess technically, it Northwest NJ. He's an assistant pro at Heron Glen golf course in Flemington, about an hour from Oak Ridge. It's a really nice course, but they are having problems getting their clubhouse built. The city's been giving them a hard time.
Ticker - Wisdom and experience, combined with youth would present a heck of a package. That's why they make you wait until you are older to receive the first two, just in time for the third to begin running out. Mentally, I still know what I want to do with the ball, and how to get it done. I still can read and react to what a much younger player is going to do. But I do admit getting frustrated when my body doesn't respond to what my brain is telling it to do in the split second I need it to. And the fact that I get winded WAY quicker than I used to gets me frustrated, too. When we were kids, we'd be out from 9 AM until the lights at the local parks would turn off. We'd shovel the court when it snowed. We'd get to practice early and stay late. I used to arrive at high school at 5:15 AM, just so I could shoot for three hours undisturbed before school, and stay until 7 PM for an extra hour after practice. I couldn't imagine any of those anymore.
I actually have played their twice already TBC. It's a nice course. A friend of mine lives in Hunterdon county in Califon so he took me there. I'll have to name drop the next time I'm there, would he respond to "TheBudCan's Dad"
-The Captain
Captain - He's pretty recognizable, as he is easily the oldest, grayest guy there. When he's not giving lessons, he's tucked away in the pro shop, or out on the course.
that sounds like a date...
