Kimbo Slice The World is Watching

Now that we are a few days removed from the biggest day in MMA’s history I wanted to give my take on Kimo Slice and his showing.

Stand up-Many casual fans tuned in to watch Kimbo KO Thompson. But I was curious to see if he could do the same thing he did in his last fight. I have seen lots of devastating KO’s since I started watching MMA, but what Bo took was not one of them. I have to say I was impressed with his MMA boxing and how he protected himself for the most part. The one thing I didn’t see was the KO, but if it wasn’t for Thompson’s ground game it would have ended a lot quicker.

Ground-I think Kimbo could be an absolute monster had he wrestled in school. If he would know basic sweeps, duck unders, slide by’s, Petersons, and lift and returns with his strength not to mention he would have a decent sprawl. Could you imagine if he slammed people from a double leg or hip return like Rampage? Ouch!

Next Match-People keep calling him out now wanting a big pay day but I have to agree with Bass and say that the fight should have been stopped in the 2nd. With that thought Thompson is owed the next fight in my opinion and should be paid equal money.

Nice analysis. I think the operative word about his ground game is "could" as in "not." He does NOT have a serviceable ground game right now. I think the issue most fans have with Slice is not his potential or his future ability to be a star -- it's the way EliteXC is promoting him as if he's a current contender.

I can't necessarily blame either Slice (who is getting paid because of his status) or EliteXC (which is getting paid because of Slice's status) but the reality is Slice is a decent athlete, just not a great MMA fighter right now and new fans to the sport are not getting a fair sampling of what the sport has to offer when they watch Slice fight and see him hyped as a Mike Tyson of MMA...

No and I doubt we'll see that. Typically it's the state athletic commissions that do that. As an example Nevada releases that info but New Jersey (where the EliteXC event was held) does not.

Was that to show or was that to show + win? In other words, is this his base salary or his total salary (including win bonus)?

Oh good point. I don't know? I just heard him say Kimbo made that much the link is posted on here were he said that Kimbo should have lost the fight in the 2nd.
Check out this article
“Somebody please explain to me how we live in a country where CBS can show Mixed Martial Arts on television without an issue but people are still upset about Janet Jackson's nipple being exposed for less than two seconds in a Super Bowl halftime show. About 200,000 Americans complained about seeing Jackson's nipple. Call me crazy, but presumably many of these same people have seen female nipples before.”

About Janet Jackson, I agree

About Janet Jackson, I agree that this country overreacted. I haven't read the article yet so I'm not sure what point the writer is trying to make. In Europe nudity and displaying the human body are par for the course...

But, generally speaking I feel like this country has always been ok with violence and less ok with sexuality...

"Think about the sports that you enjoy watching -- there's a level of artistry to them when they're performed at their highest level. Think of Kobe swooping to the basket while avoiding defenders, Ali bobbing and weaving on the ropes, or a perfectly executed fade pass for a touchdown by Peyton Manning. Show me the artistry in anything that CBS showed Saturday night. Put plainly, it didn't exist."

This will make you want to read it lol

Unfortunately, to a certain degree the writer is correct. This was not MMA at its finest. Shaw filled the card with standup specialists but they aren't as good as boxers so it looked like sloppy boxing. That's what I hate about the matchmaking. MMA is about the ground game too. Not much of that in what we saw on Saturday...

He mentioned guys who are all-time greats. How many football games, basketball games, and boxing matches do they have on TV every year that blow ass and are amature at best? Did someone mention the 2007 Miami Dolphins?

Ticker is right in the sense that it was not a good display of technical MMA. It was basically on the same levels as a pre-season game between the Oakland Raiders and the Detroit Lions - they show those on TV too!
