Elite success was a decent success

Elite success was a decent success

The show did a 2.7 rating in prime time based on the fast nationals. The final rating will be higher because that number only counts 9-11 p.m. The peak half hour was a 4.7 for Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson and that was after 11 p.m. and will blow away all marks for the most-watched MMA match in history. Nothing but Saturday Night Live ever does post 11 p.m. numbers like that.

Full ratings will be out on Tuesday but it's likely to be in the 3.0 to 3.3 range depending on what the 11-11:30 p.m. half hour did.

The overall number isn't necessary through the roof, but is a definite success. The growth from start-to-finish was the real story. It was No. 1 for the night in 18-34 and 18-49 as well as all male demos.

I am pretty impressed myself in the numbers. Imagine what a UFC ppv quality show might have done.

Also, a very poignant editorial piece on Elite XC

my only complaint is that ufc has a deal with yahoo. so may be biased but we were all thinking everything he said.

i just realized the title of this forum was redubdant. it matches perfectly with the show from sat.

They now have this on the yahoo main page as well. This is no horrible exposure for MMA

In case you're wondering, I'm waiting for the final numbers for the fightticker.com contest.

i'm going to guess that their will be a second show, but that the second show will be a complete ratings bust unless elite can sign tito. that seriously might be the only thing that can save them now that kimbo has proved he's light years away from being a top fighter.

Yeah, I think we can put all the Kimbo talk to rest now. I'll be curious to see how Shaw handles him from now on given how badly he was exposed...The undercard fights were a much better display of MMA...too bad very few people watched them...

The 2.7 rating from 9-11 approximates to 4.3 million viewers.

i could have swore they were looking for something in the 6-7 million range weren't they?

either way, i think CBS knows that they are going to have to do some major damage control because no one who watched that came out satisfied.

Papa,
Those numbers are their quick preliminary numbers. The final numbers will be out tomorrow and will be higher.

I'm hearing that CBS was very pleased with the performance of the show...

cbs must have low standards then...

i wonder when we'll hear from Dana about how big of a joke he thought the EXC card was.

Dana already has... although it was in typical Dana fashion using expletives and bashing fighters.

Bash Shaw and XC all you want... but all of the fighters, including Kimbo and JT, came and gave it thier best. Calling Thompson a joke (which I think is unfair... he has taken some beatings the last several fights, but he has also delievered them too (Yoshida) - as the president of an organization, I dont think he should bash guys who come and give it thier all - which Thompson did minus the ear).

One of the things White said that jumped out at me:

"PS Every reporter that covered the Kimbo fight should be beat with a F___King Stick!..."

I guess that means you Ticker... where do we sign up? *seaches for bamboo stick* haha!!!

Here's my question to Dana White -- Why are you yourself talking about the show then?

It was the story last week and any reporter not covering it was a fool...

yeah DW has a big mouth and is usually out of line but he can put on a good show at least. he's looking like an absolute genius right now.

I dont mind him calling out XC or Shaw... they put on a sub par performace that wreaked of disorganization and low class - certainly not primetime worthy. But the fighters all came to fight. And calling out the reporters for covering it just shows how jealous and petty he is and I think does him or the UFC no favors when he acts and talks like that. There are brief moments I tip my hat to the decisions he has made (getting behind the Chuck-hype machine, TUF, not protecting his 'stars', cutting Starns on the spot) that have helped to build the UFC empire, but then he blows it all when he talks like a low level fight promoter looking to cut down the competition and fighters not under contract rather than build up his organization and fighters.

for sure...he shouldn't be calling fighters garbage (neither should i but i'm not a public figure!). DW has definitely made some mistakes, but has done more good than harm for the sport. he was smart enough to push the whole "MMA fighters are educated, hard working, skilled athletes" angle to america though and gary shaw might just ruin those years of work in a single night.

Oh he has definately done more good for the sport than bad... but it's one thing for you or I to call a fighter garbage... but it's entirely different when you are the President of the biggest MMA organization in the world. He has to be elevated to a higher standard. His words can crush guys careers and ability to earn a living.

JT did not put a on good show, and certainly didnt bring out the best in MMA, no doubt. But the guy was professional and came to win - much to Shaws distain I'm sure. The same with Kimbo - he came and fought and he was humble about the whole thing. DW should be focusing his comments on Shaw's and his org... not the fighters - or the reporters for that matter.

I hope CBS drops XC... I don't want a diluted version of my favorite sport with over-hype and early stoppages being the main-stay.

Very well-written article. Thanks for the find HardyZ.

LOL:

"3. The CBS announcing crew’s endless hyperbole reaching its pinnacle when one of them compared Kimbo to Tiger Woods.

This would be applicable if Tiger had gained fame hitting trick shots in putt putt and then was invited to a second rate club championship which CBS was conned into televising. He then shot a final round 124, after which he was declared the winner anyway."

I love this part The judges. Kimbo spent most of the second round getting his skull hit and thanking the heavens that Colossus could only manage weak punches and elbows. Anyone else and this ends ugly. Even with Colossus, the fight could have been called (ha) in this undeniably terrible round for Kimbo.

Naturally, one of the “impartial judges” scored the round in his favor anyway. If this had gone to decision, is there any doubt at least one of the judges would have scored the three-round fight for Kimbo, five rounds to zero?

he said what all the mma hardcores were thinking.

I thought one of the judges scored it 10-8 for Thompson that round and the other two had it 10-9?

I'm happy to see judges score a round 10-8... there are a lot more 10-8 rounds than are scored that way.

One judge had it 10-9 Thomson, another had it 10-8 Thomspon, and the third had it 10-9 Slice.

HOLY CRAP 10-9 Slice?? I missed that. AWFUL!

It would be interesting to see someone do a little research and write an article about the process to select judges for both MMA and Boxing. How the hell can one judge score it 10-8 Thompson and the other score it 10-9 Slice???

Well I would think the one who scored it 10-8 Thompson was legit and the other was paid off?

I don't like to think there are payoffs... who knows, maybe I am wrong. I would lean more towards not knowing what the hell they are doing. Friends of state commissioners, etc...

i like to think that...

Kimbo has been over most of ESPN today, they talked about it on 1st and 10. Skip actually backed up MMA, even though saying he didnt watch the fights because women's college softball was on. The writer (Rob ____) from Detroit bashed it with the usual bullcrap.
And getting home tonight I put on NFL Live before sports center. The guys on the show hyped Kimbo as if he Ko'd thompson like it was the Tank fight. I guess if people only see the highlight then Kimbo is still a beast

I think now more than ever the average HW stud walking out of high school who has been in enough fights to know to cover his face long enough to get a take down could take Kimbo out.
